Musician Turned Photographer

Swapping Sound for Light
Drawing on a background in music, I aim to create cinematic, heartfelt images that feel as warm and resonant as the moments they capture.

Classical Trumpet Player from London Turned Couples Photographer in Tokyo.

Hi there! I’m Ross. Thanks so much for stopping by and checking out my website — I hope you like what you see.

As you have no doubt figured out by now, my journey into photography actually began in a very different place: with music. I once pursued a career as a professional trumpet player in London, hoping to fill concert halls, churches, and cathedrals with a rich, warm-yet-bright, silky trumpet sound. I came close to that dream - very close! But life had other plans, and a move to Japan became the turning point in my story.

Here, I rediscovered photography, something that had always been more than just a passing interest. What began as a creative outlet to replace performing soon became a true passion. At first, I lost myself in street photography and landscapes, but over time I was drawn more and more to people — to portraiture, where stories truly come alive.

For me, photography and music are deeply connected. Both are creative pursuits with the power to transport us back in time. Just as music provides the soundtrack to our lives and can carry us back to the moments, places, and feelings we hold dear, a photograph can return us to the thoughts and emotions alive in the instant the shutter clicked.

That belief shapes every photograph I take. I aim to create images with the same qualities I once sought in music: warmth, smoothness, and resonance. Through cinematic editing and soft, luminous tones, I strive to capture not just how a moment looked, but how it felt — keeping it alive long after the shutter has closed.

It all started with Elope in Japan

Alongside my own photography, I have the privilege of working with my wife, Ayako — the founder and creative heart behind Elope in Japan. She’s the driving force, blending her planning expertise with a deep love for Japanese traditions to create intimate, guest-free weddings that feel both authentic and romantic.

My part has always been to complement hers, capturing the stories as they unfold. And honestly, one of the best parts of those early years was working alongside some of Tokyo’s most talented photographers — each wedding felt like a masterclass in its own right. I was constantly learning, growing, and refining my own craft in real time.

That experience gave me more than just technical skills. It taught me how to read the flow of a wedding day, to notice the cultural nuances, and to tune into the little details that matter most to couples. Now, with a style that reflects my journey so far, I bring all of that knowledge into my photography and aim to create images with the same warmth, resonance, and lasting impact I once sought in music.

Together, Ayako and I create not just weddings, but experiences — and photographs, that resonate with the emotions of the day.

What it’s Like to Work With Me

Working with me is never a quiet experience: I talk a lot! Whether it’s cracking a joke, making a passing comment, or gently teasing out a reaction, I use conversation to keep the energy flowing and help you feel at ease in front of the camera. I don’t believe in stiff posing - though I often try for a couple of “Vogue” shots during my sessions; I’d much rather capture natural expressions that come from laughter, connection, and genuine moments.

I’m also a fan of history, so if we’re shooting in a spot with an interesting past, I’ll probably share a story or two. Every session is different, and I like to keep things fresh by trying something new each time. That means I’m especially drawn to couples who want to create together — to explore, experiment, and shape photographs that are not only beautiful, but uniquely theirs.
