A Guide to Couples Photography in Tokyo

Tokyo is a city of contrasts, and one of the most fascinating places in the world for couples photography.

Ancient shrines and temples stand quietly beside neon streets. Small neighbourhood alleyways open suddenly onto wide boulevards filled with movement and light. One moment you are walking through the calm of a shrine forest, the next you are surrounded by the rhythm of the world’s largest city.

Couples photography in Tokyo perfectly encapsulates these contrasts, and creates something extra special in the moment and for all time.

A photoshoot in Tokyo is not just about taking pictures in beautiful places, though that helps! It is about capturing a moment in your journey together — whether that journey is a honeymoon, an engagement trip, or simply a long-awaited visit to Japan.

Over the years I’ve photographed couples from around the world as they explored Tokyo for the first time. Some couples choose Japan as the destination for their elopement. Others arrive just after their wedding, while some come here to celebrate an anniversary. And many simply want a way to remember a trip that feels different from any other destination.

Tokyo is also a city that changes dramatically depending on where you stand. A quiet residential street can sit only a few minutes away from one of the busiest pedestrian crossings in the world. Tiny neighbourhood shrines appear between apartment buildings, while traditional wooden houses still exist within sight of modern skyscrapers.

For visiting couples, this variety creates endless possibilities for photographs. Within a short walk, a session can move from peaceful greenery to vibrant city energy, allowing the images to tell a story that reflects both sides of Tokyo at once.

Tokyo offers something unique for these moments.

This guide will walk you through what makes Tokyo, and by extension - Japan, such a unique place for couples photography, the best times of year to plan a shoot, what locations work well, and how photography sessions typically unfold.

Why Couples Choose Tokyo for Photography

The popularity of couples photography in Tokyo has really exploded in recent years.

People visit for many reasons, but couples photography sessions tend to happen during a few common moments in life:

  • the beginning of a new chapter — an engagement or elopement.

  • to celebrate a milestone such as a honeymoon or anniversary.

  • first time in Japan

What these moments share is the desire to preserve a memory in a place that feels unique. Tokyo offers a setting that combines culture, atmosphere, and visual variety in a way few cities can.

Pre-Wedding and Engagements Trips

Tokyo has also become a favourite destination for engagement and proposal trips.

Couples often arrive knowing that a proposal will take place during the visit, or planning to celebrate their engagement while travelling through Japan.

An engagement photoshoot allows couples to document that moment in a setting that feels cinematic and memorable — something very different from a traditional studio session at home.

Elopements and Weddings

Over the past ten or so years, Japan has become one of the world’s top destinations for elopements and weddings.

The number of companies, planners and photographers specializing in this space is a testament to that very demand.

Indeed companies such as Elope in Japan, where I got started with couples photography, have played an important role role in promoting Japan as a destination for visiting couples.

Honeymoons

Alongside elopements, Japan has also become one of the world’s most popular honeymoon destinations.

Tokyo often forms the beginning and/or end of a larger journey that might include Kyoto, Hakone, or Mount Fuji. Many couples choose to schedule a photoshoot early in their trip while they are still adjusting to the excitement of arriving in Japan.

The energy of Tokyo works beautifully for honeymoon photographs. Neon streets, quiet gardens, and hidden alleyways create a visual story that feels distinctly Japanese.

Many honeymoon couples also appreciate the relaxed structure of a photography session in Tokyo. Rather than spending hours posing in one location, the experience often feels like an evening walk through the city together. The photographs become a natural record of that time — moments of laughter, quiet conversation, and the sense of exploring somewhere new side by side.

My Tokyo Prelude photo walks are perfect for this kind of relaxed honeymoon session.

Anniversary Celebrations and Vow Renewals

For some couples, the photoshoot marks a milestone.

Five years. Ten years. Twenty-five.

Many couples say that they have visited Japan before and always dreamed of returning together. A photography session becomes a way to celebrate that shared history while creating something new, either as a stand alone photo session or a vow renewal ceremony.

Unlike a wedding day, which can move quickly and involve many people, an anniversary session is often more relaxed and personal. Couples can revisit the feeling of their earlier years together while creating new memories in a completely different setting.

Despite its scale, Tokyo has a surprising ability to feel intimate.

Anime/Cosplay

Another growing trend in recent years is anime tourism. Many couples first discover Japan through anime and manga, and visiting the real-world locations connected to those stories has become an important part of their travels.

Some couples choose to incorporate cosplay into their session, while others simply enjoy visiting locations that inspired their favourite scenes. Either way, it adds another layer of personal meaning to their photographs.

Best Seasons for Couples Photography in Tokyo

Tokyo changes dramatically through the seasons. The time of year you visit can shape the atmosphere of your photographs just as much as the location itself. Each season has something different for each couple.  Some people make it a plan to visit Japan in each season throughout their lives.

Cherry Blossom Season (Late March – Early April)

Cherry blossom season is perhaps the most famous time to visit Japan. It is after all quintessential Japan.  Nearly every Hollywood movie scene set in Japan prominently features cherry blossoms (often unrealistically, I might add!).

For a brief - 10 day - period each spring, parks and riversides fill with delicate pink blossoms. The city takes on a celebratory atmosphere as locals gather beneath the trees to enjoy the short-lived beauty of the season.

Photographing during sakura season can be magical, but it also requires planning and flexibility. Popular locations become crowded quickly, and the timing of the blooms varies each year - sometimes by a several weeks rather than days, so depending on your dates, it might be wise to consider backup options.

Most cherry blossom locations are in very public areas that get intensely crowded, so couples need to ask themselves how comfortable they will be. If you are somewhat self-conscious, this might not be your cup of tea.

Many couples choose quieter gardens or lesser-known areas where the experience remains peaceful. This is where I come in - as a 23 year resident of Tokyo, I have a few quiet spots up my sleeve - and learning about new locations every year.

Early morning sessions are often the best way to experience sakura at its most peaceful. The city has not yet fully woken up, and the soft morning light filtering through the blossoms creates a gentle atmosphere that photographs beautifully.

That said - the period immediately after the cherry blossoms is also a beautiful time - with fresh greens and floral blooms all round. So even if you miss the peak cherry blossom time, Japan still offers a wonderful backdrop.

Summer Evenings (June – August)

Summer in Tokyo is warm and humid, but it offers something visually striking.

As evening falls, the city comes alive with neon reflections, glowing lanterns, and lively streets. For couples who enjoy urban energy, summer sessions can produce photographs that feel vibrant and cinematic.

Naturally, very early morning or evening sessions are often the most comfortable during this time of year, as daytime temperatures can exceed 40 degrees Celsius.

During these months I like to take couples on (relatively) cool evening walks by Tokyo Bay, with stunning views of the city, to capture the setting sun and twinkling lights of the night city (and hopefully the breeze coming off the bay). It is the epitome of romance.

Summer festivals also take place throughout the city during these months. Lanterns, street food stalls, and traditional yukata create a lively seasonal atmosphere that can add character to evening photographs.

Autumn Leaves (November)

Autumn is one of the most beautiful seasons in Tokyo. If you ask, a lot of Japanese people will tell you that it is their favourite season. After the long hot humidity of the summer, the cooler autumn breeze brings a huge sense of relief.  Add to this the upcoming excitement of the end of year festivities, and it is easy to see why this season is enjoyed by many.

Maple trees turn shades of deep red and gold, transforming parks and temple grounds into rich landscapes of colour. The air becomes cooler, and the light softens in a way that photographers love, and makes editing a dream!

The oranges, reds and yellows really create a warm nostalgic vibe that carry the memories long after the trip itself.

Autumn sessions, like cherry blossom sessions require a little bit of planning, but the window of opportunity is longer, typically from mid-November to mid-December.

Winter (December – February)

Winter is Tokyo’s quietest photography season, and in many ways one of the most underrated.

The air becomes crisp (to the point of being dry) and clear, crowds are lighter, and the city takes on a more contemplative atmosphere. Bare trees and winter light create a subtle, cinematic look that many couples find surprisingly beautiful.

The Japanese also love winter illuminations, either Christmas related or not. These are found across Japan and throughout Tokyo, offering wonderfully romantic backdrops for couples and families alike.

Winter also offers some of the clearest views of Mount Fuji from Tokyo’s far western districts. On particularly clear days, the mountain appears dramatically on the horizon — something many visitors do not expect to see from within the city itself.

Best Time of Day for Photography in Tokyo

While the season shapes the atmosphere of a photoshoot, the time of day often has an even greater impact on the final images.

Early morning sessions are usually the most peaceful. Many of Tokyo’s popular locations — especially historic districts and gardens — become busy as the day progresses. Photographing shortly after sunrise allows couples to experience these places in a calmer atmosphere, with soft natural light that photographs beautifully.

Evening sessions offer a completely different mood. As the sun sets, the city begins to glow. Street lights, lanterns, and neon reflections create a cinematic quality that is unique to Tokyo. Areas with small restaurants, narrow alleys, and illuminated signs can produce photographs that feel vibrant and full of energy.

For couples visiting Japan for the first time, choosing the right time of day can help balance beautiful light with a relaxed experience.

Popular Tokyo Locations for Couples Photos

Tokyo offers an enormous variety of photography locations, from traditional temple districts to modern city streets.

Some couples arrive with a clear idea of where they would like to go, based on images they have seen on social media. Others prefer to discover places that feel more local and less crowded.

A few popular options include:

Historic Districts

Areas like Asakusa offer glimpses of Tokyo’s older architectural character. Traditional streets, small temples, and lantern-lit pathways create an atmosphere that feels deeply connected to Japan’s past.

Walking through districts like Asakusa often feels like stepping briefly into another era of Tokyo. Narrow streets lined with traditional shopfronts, incense drifting from temple courtyards, and the distant sound of temple bells create a sense of atmosphere that photographs beautifully.

Early morning is often the best time to photograph here. Before the large tour groups arrive, the streets are quieter and the light is softer, allowing couples to experience the historic surroundings in a more relaxed way.

Shrine Forests

Locations such as Meiji Shrine provide a completely different environment. Tall trees and quiet paths create a sense of calm that feels far removed from the surrounding city.

These shrine forests are intentionally designed to create a sense of separation from the city beyond their gates. As you walk deeper along the gravel paths, the noise of traffic gradually fades and the atmosphere becomes calmer.

For couples who prefer natural, understated photographs, these environments can be ideal. The tall trees create beautiful filtered light, and the simple architecture of the shrine buildings provides elegant, timeless backgrounds.

Note: Shooting in wedding dresses would not be permitted at places like Meiji shrine. Wearing regular clothes usually doesn’t present a problem.

Japanese Gardens

Tokyo is home to several beautiful traditional gardens designed around seasonal change and quiet reflection.

Traditional Japanese gardens are carefully designed landscapes rather than wild parks. Every element — from the placement of stones to the shape of the trees — is arranged to create balance and seasonal beauty.

Because of this careful design, gardens can provide an almost painterly backdrop for photographs. Reflections in the ponds, curved bridges, and seasonal foliage create compositions that feel harmonious and quiet.

Note: Permits are often required to shoot in these areas - especially if you plan to wear wedding dress or kimono. Wearing regular clothes usually doesn’t present a problem.

Neighbourhood Streets

Some of the most authentic photographs happen in ordinary neighbourhood streets.

Small cafés, quiet alleyways, and local shops, away from the tourist hordes, create scenes that feel natural and spontaneous. These locations often capture the everyday rhythm of Tokyo in a way that larger tourist areas cannot.

These locations often produce the most authentic images of Tokyo. Rather than focusing on famous landmarks, the photographs capture the everyday character of the city — bicycles leaning against walls, small restaurants preparing for the evening rush, and narrow alleys filled with soft lantern light.

Couples often say that these images later become their favourites, because they remind them of the feeling of walking through Tokyo rather than simply visiting a tourist destination.

Again, neighbourhood streets lend themselves perfectly to a Tokyo Prelude photo-session.

What to Wear for a Tokyo Photoshoot

Clothing plays an important role in the overall look and feel of a photography session.

In general, simple and timeless choices tend to photograph best.

Neutral colours — such as cream, navy, soft pastels, or earth tones — work well against Tokyo’s varied backgrounds. Avoiding large logos or heavy patterns helps keep the focus on the couple rather than the clothing.

Many couples choose outfits that allow movement, such as flowing dresses or lightweight fabrics that respond naturally to wind and motion. For practical reasons, dresses or skirts that allow comfortable movement tend to work best. Locations often involve short walks and steps, so clothing that allows natural movement makes the session easier and more relaxed.

Comfortable footwear is also important, especially when walking between locations.

Layers can also be helpful depending on the season. Tokyo’s weather can change quickly, particularly in spring and autumn, so bringing a light jacket or shawl can add flexibility during the session.

Couples sometimes choose to bring two outfits: one casual and one slightly more formal. This allows the photographs to capture different moods during the session without feeling overly staged. Just note that this would require some pre-planning to find appropriate places to get changed.

Some couples consider wearing kimono for their photographs. This can be a beautiful cultural experience when arranged thoughtfully with experienced dressers and stylists.

Practical Tips for Couples Visiting Tokyo

If you are visiting Tokyo for the first time, there are a few small things that can make a photography session more enjoyable.

Allow extra travel time. Tokyo’s train system is efficient but large, and some stations are very big or undergoing renovation meaning that it can take time to navigate.

Bring comfortable shoes. Even short sessions often involve some walking between locations.

Check the weather forecast. Light rain can actually create beautiful photographs in Tokyo, particularly when city lights reflect off the streets, but it helps to be prepared.

Keep the schedule relaxed. The best photographs often happen when couples feel unhurried and able to enjoy the experience.

How Couples Photography Sessions Work

For couples visiting Tokyo for the first time, the idea of organising a photoshoot in another country can feel unfamiliar. In reality, the process is usually quite simple.

  • Initial Inquiry: Most couples begin by reaching out with their travel dates and a few details about their visit to Japan. This allows us to check availability and start discussing possible locations and timing.

  • Planning the Session: Once the shoot is confirmed, we plan a simple route that balances beautiful locations with a relaxed pace. The goal is never to rush from place to place. Instead, we allow time for moments to unfold naturally.

  • The Photoshoot Experience: During the session itself, the focus remains on creating a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Most couples are not professional models, and they do not need to be. Gentle guidance and conversation help create natural moments rather than forced poses.

In fact, it is not uncommon for couples to feel awkward in front of a camera at the start of the session. This is completely normal. Most of the couples I photograph have never done a photoshoot before — gentle guidance throughout the session helps everything feel natural and relaxed.

The goal of the session is not to create perfect poses, but to capture genuine interaction — walking together, sharing a conversation, or simply enjoying the surroundings.

That said, I view the process as collaborative and always encourage my couples to let me know any ideas or inspiration they have before and during the session.  Oftentimes, ideas come to us in the moment, and I love it when people tell me the ideas they have.  Sessions like this bring out the best of each couple and always provide me with inspiration to carry forward to other sessions.

Over time, most couples forget about the camera entirely, and that is when the most natural photographs happen. The result is an album that feels authentic to the couple and the environment around them.

  • Editing and Delivery: After the session, the photographs are carefully edited and prepared for delivery. Couples receive a curated gallery of images that reflect the atmosphere of the day — quiet moments, shared laughter, and the feeling of exploring Tokyo together. The gallery will be in digital format, with the option to order prints and frames of individual images or complete printed albums.

How to Book a Couples Photographer in Tokyo

Choosing a photographer in another country can feel like a big decision. Every photographer approaches sessions differently, so it helps to look for someone whose style and approach resonate with you.

Some photographers focus heavily on posed editorial images, while others prefer a more documentary style that captures natural interactions as couples explore the city together. Neither approach is right or wrong — the key is finding someone whose work reflects the kind of memories you hope to preserve.

Looking through full galleries rather than just highlight images can also help couples understand how a photographer works throughout an entire session.

Tokyo has become an increasingly popular destination for couples photography, especially during peak seasons such as cherry blossom and autumn.

For this reason, it is generally best to book a session once your travel dates are confirmed.

When reaching out, it helps to include:

* your travel dates

* the purpose of the photoshoot (honeymoon, engagement, anniversary, etc.)

* any locations or styles that appeal to you

From there, we can discuss the best timing for the session and create a plan that fits naturally within your visit to Tokyo.

Final Thoughts

In a city as layered as Tokyo, every street and season offers something different. No two sessions unfold in exactly the same way, because each couple brings their own story to the experience.

That combination — a unique city and a unique relationship — is what makes couples photography here so rewarding.

It is a city that reveals itself slowly — through quiet streets, unexpected gardens, and fleeting moments of light between buildings.

For couples travelling together, those small discoveries often become the most meaningful memories of the trip.

A photography session offers a way to preserve those moments — not as staged portraits, but as a reflection of the experience itself. And years later, the photographs will become more than images of a city. They become reminders of a journey shared together.

In a city as dynamic as Tokyo, those memories often become some of the most meaningful souvenirs couples bring home.

FAQs

  • Couples photography sessions in Tokyo vary depending on the photographer, the length of the session, and whether additional services such as kimono rental or hair and makeup are included.

Most professional sessions typically range from around ¥70,000 for shorter shoots to ¥150,000 or more for extended experiences that include multiple locations.

Some photographers also offer packages specifically designed for honeymoon, engagement, or anniversary sessions, which may include planning assistance and location guidance.

  • In many public areas, casual photography is permitted without special permission, particularly when couples are wearing normal clothing.

However, some parks and gardens require permits for professional photography, especially if couples plan to wear wedding attire or bring additional equipment.

An experienced local photographer will usually advise on locations where permits are required and handle the process where necessary.

  • Light rain can actually create beautiful photographs in Tokyo. Reflections from street lights and lanterns often produce a cinematic atmosphere that many couples love.

Most photographers will monitor the weather closely and may suggest adjusting the schedule slightly if heavy rain is expected. Tokyo’s weather can change quickly, and short showers often pass within an hour.

  • Most couples photography sessions in Tokyo last between 1.5 and 3 hours.

This allows enough time to visit several nearby locations while keeping the experience relaxed and enjoyable. Some couples choose longer sessions if they would like photographs in different neighbourhoods or if they plan to change outfits during the shoot.

  • Yes, many couples choose to wear traditional kimono during their photoshoot.

Kimono photography can be a wonderful cultural experience when arranged with experienced dressers and stylists who understand how the garments should be worn.

Because kimono are more structured than everyday clothing, sessions are usually planned carefully to ensure comfort and allow enough time for preparation.
